Amen.
First Sunday after Christmas
by David HymanDec. 30, 2012
This morning we meditate on what it means that the Word became flesh and dwelt among us. Our text was John's Prologue (John 1:1-18).
The Logos, the Word, Jesus Christ was there at the beginning of Creation to make humanity - to create us. He made us by simply saying some words. He did not remake us so easily. He made us by speaking. He remade us by dying. He made us by commanding. He remade us through his own suffering.

DownloadThird Sunday in Lent
by David HymanMarch 11, 2012
If Christ's zeal was stirred up for the Temple that day in Jerusalem, to see the Father honored in the right worship of his people, it stands to reason, we ought to examine our own lives, our own hearts, with the same intentionality and passion that Jesus demonstrated that day. Do we have holy and righteous indignation for the sin that exists in our lives? Or do we just coddle those sins, nurture them, feed them, or justify them? Have we simply given in?

DownloadForgive, as we forgive - The Prayer that Jesus Taught Us Part 5
by David HymanFeb. 12, 2012
This sermon is the fifth in a series on the Lord’s Prayer given at Holy Trinity - Chatham by the Rev David Hyman on January 29th, 2012. It examines the phrase, "Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us."
There is a saying, “He who pardons easily, invites offense.” The sentiment is all wrong at the word pardon because true pardon, true forgiveness does not come easily. It did come easily for us – it required all that Christ was and all that he did to make it possible. Likewise, as we forgive others, it often requires allowing ourselves to admit the injustice, to feel the pain, refusing to say, “I’m fine. It’s not big deal."
Give us this Day - The Prayer that Jesus Taught Us Part 4
by David HymanFeb. 5, 2012
This sermon is the fourth in a series on the Lord’s Prayer given at Holy Trinity - Chatham by the Rev David Hyman on January 29th, 2012. It examines the phrase, "Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven."
We often think we will have peace of mind if we ask God to provide today what we will need for the future. But, as Dallas Willard points out, to have provisions in hand today does not guarantee we will have them tomorrow when we need them. Willard writes, “Today I have God, and he has the provisions. Tomorrow it will be the same I will have God and he has the provisions. So I simply ask God today for what I need today.”
DownloadThy Kingdom Come - The Prayer that Jesus Taught Us Part 3
by David HymanJan. 29, 2012
This sermon is the third in a series on the Lord’s Prayer given at Holy Trinity - Chatham by the Rev David Hyman on January 29th, 2012. It examines the phrase, "Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven."
It is my experience that as Americans, many of us have an innate, knee-jerk reaction to the word kingdom. It’s almost genetic, as if it is in our DNA to reject or be skeptical of the idea of monarchy. I am certain this is because our country is extremely proud that its history began with the overthrow of a king, and that no sovereign has ruled our land since. Indeed, we love democracy and I dare say our national history doesn’t help us much here as come to this word kingdom.
DownloadWho art in Heaven, Hallowed be thy Name: The Prayer that Jesus Taught Us - Part 2
by David HymanJan. 22, 2012
This sermon is the second in a series on the Lord’s Prayer given at Holy Trinity - Chatham by the Rev David Hyman on January 22nd, 2012. It examines the phrase, "Who art in heaven" and the first petition of the prayer, "Hallowed be thy name."
How often do we begin our prayers with our laundry list of needs and then as soon as we’re done, we move on to the next thing in front of us? We jump in with all of our concerns, all of our needs, and we tell God how things need to be in our lives. And then, we quickly move on to the next important thing that needs to get done. This prayer teaches us to start with asking that who God is be revealed, that his name be hallowed above all else. He is the one who deserves honor and glory and praise.
DownloadOur Father: The Prayer that Jesus Taught Us - Part 1

DownloadRemember your Baptism
by David HymanJan. 8, 2012
This sermon was given at Holy Trinity - Chatham on January 8th, 2012 by the Rev David Hyman on the Feast of the Baptism of our Lord.
DownloadThus it appears what a great, excellent thing Baptism is, which delivers us from the jaws of the devil and makes us God’s own, suppresses and takes away sin, and then daily strengthens the new person, and is and remains ever efficacious until we pass from this estate of misery to eternal glory.
For this reason let every one esteem his or her Baptism as a daily dress in which he is to walk constantly, that they may ever be found in the faith and its fruits, that he suppress the old man and grow up in the new.

DownloadHome. What does it mean to be home? Home, at its core, is not just about a physical place, it can be that, but it is more centrally about relationship or a set of relationships. Home is the place where I belong and I am accepted. Home is where I have a place at the table – not as a guest but as a welcomed and accepted member of the family.
